Dear Mr. President,
As a professor, a member of the LGBT advisory committee of the University of Saskatchewan, and a strong supporter of equality for
all Koreans, I am writing to you to protest the elimination of 7 essential
categories from the originally proposed Anti-Discrimination Act.
The Constitution of the Republic of Korea guarantees equal protection
for all citizens because everyone deserves freedom from discrimination.
There is currently no nation-wide comprehensive protection against
discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The originally
proposed bill was not a claim to "new" or "special" rights, but rather included
basic protections for human dignity to the most vulnerable groups in our
nation. However, in October 2007, the Department of Justice announced a new
version of the Anti-Discrimination Act after eliminating 7 categories. This new
proposal will result in the discrimination against the civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights of many citizens of Korea.
In passing the original Anti-Discrimination Act that included all 7
categories, the Republic of Korea would join the rapidly growing ranks
of progressive countries around the world that recognize the rights and
dignities of all citizens. That is why it is so important for you to intervene and
restore the original Anti-Discrimination Act so that fair law will be
applied to all underprivileged minority citizens of Korea.
I thank you in advance for your commitment to equality and on behalf of all Koreans, including
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens in the Republic of Korea.
