Dear Prime Minister Duck-soo,
On behalf of the Women’s and Gender Studies Department at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, I am writing in response to recent Human Rights Watch reports indicating that there is considerable danger that Human Rights protections on the basis of sexual orientation may be removed from Korea’s anti-discrimination law.
As part of the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues at the university which is working for the most inclusive Human Rights legislation possible in Canada, and with great respect for the leadership Korea has shown in protecting inclusive Human Rights in the past, we are dismayed by any implied rollback of existing protections under anti-discrimination law. History has amply proven that targeting any group for discrimination ultimately puts all people in the impacted country at risk.
